Simulating cooperation in simple road networks using agent based models

In this paper, we examine the day to day dynamics on a simple road network where system optimal route recommendations are available to the drivers, and they base their actions upon the utility derived from the recommendations. We found that route recommendations have the potential of reducing the aggregate travel time in the network and bringing it closer to the SO state. Many factors contribute to the ability of route recommendations to improve aggregate travel time, such as network design, the protocol according to which the recommendations are allocated to the agents each day, and the persuasion mechanisms used, such as punishment and rewards.
